Chair

Shelie V.

Fellow addicts,                                                                         October 20, 2002

This month completes my 17-month term as Ozark Area chair.  I want to let you all know how honored I feel to have been a part of this committee for the past four years but especially for this time that I have served as your chair.  Personally, I have overcome much insecurity while serving in this capacity, believe it or not.  And to be honest, often I have felt that I had bitten off more than I could chew.  But I was determined to do my best and to fulfill my commitment and you all stood behind me.  Thank you for your patience and understanding. I pray you will show the same patience and understanding as the next chair steps into position.

I believe I have seen unity expressed during our meetings much more over the past few months than ever before.  I also want to thank you all for your hard work and dedication.  Without the commitment you express this committee would suffer a great deal and as a result our meetings would suffer and as a result our fellow addicts would suffer.

The main thing I hope you all drew from me as I worked alongside you over this past 17 months is that I feel this committee needs to stay focused on our primary purpose.  We meet in order to find ways to better carry the message to the addict who still suffers.  With our hearts –together – focused on that we can’t make wrong choices.

Thank you for the opportunity to serve.

                                                                                                                        OASC Chair

                                                                                                                        Shelie V

Vice-Chair

Wendy A.

Hello Ozark Area,

I did not make it to the sub-committee meetings this month, but did talk to some of the chairs about how they went.  I know that we lack people showing up for sub-committees, but it has been that way since I had six months clean.  I feel taking feelings of anger to a meeting and telling people to show up, so they don’t have to do something that goes against the sub-committee guidelines is wrong.  We set guidelines for a reason and should stand by them unless voted at a sub-committee to change them or make an exception.  I would also like to take this time to say thank you for letting me serve as Area Vice-Chair.  I couldn’t begin to tell you how I have learned and grown in my recovery, and how we are just a little part of carrying the message that gets to millions of people.  Without the groups there is no Area.  So I would like to tell the groups, thank you for showing up and making this area happen.

In Loving Service,

Wendy A.

Jackee – I balanced the HOLP 2002 checkbook.  I found a math error of $10 and the account was off by 2 cents, which I couldn’t find.  There were service charges of $14.  There are 2 outstanding checks – one is for $200 for the cooker and the other is for the merchandise cups that were shipped to the campout.  The second check for cups is still in my possession, since HOLP Committee has not received a bill for those cups.  The balance on the account is $976.48, with the outstanding checks still figured in.

Discussion:  It was determined that the check for the cooker was mailed and not received  by the intended recipient.

Hello Ozark Area,

Thank you for sending me to the October RSC and here is what’s happening around your region. Cabin Fever in February deadline on mugs is December 22nd.   M.K.A.C.N.A., May 2,3,4 Atchinson KS,  St. Louis hosted.  They have set aside $400.00 a month so that deaf and hearing impaired can have interpreters at meetings.  They have also bought another TTY machine so they can get phone calls from deaf and hearing impaired addicts.  Southwest (Springfield) is having a Halloween dance Nov. 2 and there is a new area in our Region, the Show-Me Freedom Area and has 4 to 5 groups with 20 meetings a month around St. Joe.

The RD reported on 501C3 status, obviously the region is unclear that the areas voted for the region to be incorporated, but the information is being gathered on what it will take and another motion will have to be made and voted on.  The treasurer reported that they had switched banks to USBank and with some money still in one and some in another there was no clear balance at this time.

Open Forum.  The discussion was what to do about CampVention our guidelines are unclear about removal trusted servants.  SMRCNA was there about nonprofit status and asked about appointing someone for the committee because they are in need of 3 members.  Last July the region voted to send the RD and WSR chair people to the 3 zones; Plains States, Southern Zone, and Midwest and moving or not it’s still unclear which zone to move to or not move to.  It  was talked about what to do with some of the regions money about being more proactive, helping with the blind, deaf, indigent and sending people to meet with professionals to let them know about NA.  We discussed about doing something about the guidelines.  Should we go ahead and host the next Zonal Forum.  We decided to go ahead because we haven’t moved yet.  Also, about Show-Me Freedom and Mo-Kan overlapping – is it an advantage or disadvantage.  What it came down to is that it’s really none of our business.

            Then for Sunday Events.

RSO reported they’re improving the website and a new RSO order form.   They will be sending a survey card with orders.  They reported Literature Sales were $55,000 for the last quarter, which was $18,000 a month.  Texas is ordering literature from us, as well as other groups outside our Region.  The RSO is looking for someone for weekend’s pay will be $8 to $10 an hour one weekend a month.

A question arose about who will do the regional meeting schedule. Who will do it? PI or the RSO or should we even do one, probably not.

SMRCNA BOD appointed Chuck B. to the BOD and will be looking for a place for SMRCNA for Zone 2 for 2005.

Regional positions open:  RDA, Vice-Chair.  SMRCNA BOD has 2 positions open.  Host committee needs a treasurer for Zone 1.  CampVention chair open.  RSO has 3 positions open.

We also had 2 broken doors on the conference room, which cost the region $500.00 and they hope the people responsible will step up and pay.  The total budget for the region was $17,247.00

Also, two motions for guideline changes will be in next month’s report.

In Loving Service, Dale S.

MEMO

TO:                  Show-Me Region

FROM:            Mindy Atkins – Show-Me RD

DATE:             October 2002

RE:                   Incorporation of the Show-Me Region

During the July RSC, I volunteered to research the idea of formally incorporating the Show-Me Region.  I have listed what I believe is pertinent information to this issue below.

1)      Whether the Show-Me Region should be added to the SMRCNA, Inc. or RSO articles of incorporation, or incorporated separately:

The legal recommendation is to incorporate separately.  The reason given for this recommendation is that, should something negatively affect one part of our Region (SMRCNA, Inc. or RSO), other parts of our Region would not be negatively affected.

2)      The steps and cost associated with incorporation of the Show-Me Region:

a.       Formal applications to the Missouri Office of the Secretary of State

-         $25.00 one time application fee

-         $15.00 annual report (update) fee

b.      Formal application to the IRS for 501(c) (3) status

-         One-time application to IRS (three forms) with one time fees according to gross receipts

-         If gross receipts are over $10,000, fee is $500

-         If gross receipts are under $10,000, fee is $150

3)      The benefits of incorporating the Show-Me Region:

a.       Prevention of legal liability by individual members

b.      Responsibility to State and Federal statutes and laws

c.       Removal of bars against transferring finances between Show-Me RSC, RSO, and SMRCNA, Inc.

Thank you for your time and considerations regarding this matter.  Please know I am willing to become involved in this application process if the RCMs should choose to incorporate the Show-Me RSC.

Note:  No annual fee.

Discussion:  No chair yet for CampVention this year so we can’t get flyers yet.

Hello OASC,                                                                                                   Oct. 20, 02

I attended RSC in Jefferson City on Oct.  12th and 13th and am still struggling to get up to speed on all the different info.  I’m not going to rehash what Dale has reported on and will add to what was left out at our next area.  In January and July RSC had to be moved to the 3rd Sunday due to hotel accommodations so we may need to adjust our area meeting.

Hello Ozark Area,

Our Serenity in September Celebration of Recovery was a huge success. I think everyone had a good time and the campfire meeting was really great. I want to thank everyone for coming and send a special thank you to Chick H. for allowing us to use her home and Kenny C. and Dale S. for driving us on the hay ride. We brought in $160.00 from the function, but I will be needing money for the next function. I need to know if you want me to give the money to the Area and then have money given back to me for the next one, or just use this money for the next one.

Our next function is the Gratitude Year Round Chili Cook-off on Saturday November, 9th at the Galena Senior Citizens Center. The doors will open at 4:00 and there will be a Literature Review workshop at 4:30. The Chili Cook-off judging will begin at 6:30 with the winner being announced right before the speaker meeting. Our speaker for the evening will be Yvonne G., and that will begin at 8:00. A raffle and dance(with live music by “RECOVERY”) will follow the speaker meeting and that will end at 12:00. The cost is $3.00 a person, or $5:00 a couple, but no addict is ever turned away. Oh, I forgot to mention that there is a $5.00 entry fee for the chili cook-off with the winner receiving a cash prize. So lets all start cooking , don’t forget to bring raffle items and let’s all have a great time.

Our AWAM sub committee meeting went very well with 8 addicts in attendance. We discussed the next year’s budget and it was decided that it should be raised to a $200.00 regenerating budget due to the rise in the cost of building rental and D.J. services. We would also like for anyone who knows of available D.J.s , to get their names and numbers to the sub committee for future functions, since there has been trouble finding one available for the chill cook-off.  There was also discussion about this next function, and it being my last one. I have really enjoyed serving as your AWAM chair for the past year and a half, but I feel that I need to focus more on my personal recovery and service within my new home group. It has been an honor to serve and I will still be here to help out the new AWAM chair in any way possible. Thank you all.

September 22, 2002

Hello Ozark Area,

H and I is doing well in our area.  After going to Regional this month I’m seeing how much our area is in service seeing  the lack of support has brought to light how much help we have here.

Our lady in Neosho, Sandy B.  has resigned after two great years of service and passed the baton on to Danielle G.

Danielle is looking into meetings with the Sheriff and seeing if it will be possible to get a meeting started for the men in the Newton County Jail.

As it stands now we hare holding 12 presentations in 4 facilities.

Our subcommittee meeting went well with 14 in attendance.

Clean time requirements were discussed and guidelines were reviewed.  We are working on ways of keeping the newcomers involved in H & I until they have the clean time requirements for sharing in presentations.  Thanks for all the help.  Our budget proposal will remain the same as last year $1200.00

Greetings Area,

Ozark turned in 75 surveys, not counting what was done on-line.  We were #1 in our region on response.  I missed the deadline for the NA Way articles.  I did not get individual releases signed.  However, these will still be submitted to the WSO tank.  There are area’s in our Region which have requested copies of these manuscripts for their newsletters.

We have a new Literature Chair – Larry C. from the St. Louis Area.  We discussed our next projects which included:  Working with the Lone Star Region on Tradition Workbook.  I have a copy of the rough draft.  Review for Sponsorship Book is not expected until spring of ’03.  The Reg. Committee is talking about a Regional Newsletter to be put out to the Area some time maybe in ’03.  we are planning an interim meeting – tentatively 1st week of Feb. in St. Charles.  This will be a working meeting.

The next subject for manuscripts to the NA Way is “Our 7th Tradition:  What does the 7th Tradition mean to your personal recovery?”  Anyone interested in writing on this please contact me, I have the outline questions.  That deadline is December 1st.

I.P. projects remain as Illness in Recovery.  The next Literature subcommittee meeting will be the Saturday preceding the OASC at 14th and Wall. There will be a Literature Workshop at 4:30pm on 11-9-02 at the AWAM function.  There will also be a Literature Workshop at Cabin Fever scheduled for Feb. 8-10th , 03.

PI

Pam M.

This last month has been productive for your Public Information Subcommittee.  Our "Pizza, Pudding, & P.I." went very well.  Four teams of two people selected different sections or businesses in Joplin and spent a little over 2 hours putting flyers up.  During this activity and flyers put up since, we have between 60 and 70 flyers up around Joplin.           The Public Information presentation on October 9 at Lafayette House to their staff went amazingly well.  David D., David B., and myself were on the panel and we spoke for 40 minutes.  There were some questions afterward and some staff lingered to look at the literature/information table.  They took some RSO order forms with them.  Some of the staff asked if they could copy the pamphlets, which is always okay, especially for facilities of any sort.  David D. brought a tape recorder to tape our presentation so we could do further work on it, if need be.  Lafayette House had no problem with us taping.  Our next subcommittee meeting is next Sunday, October 27 at 2pm at 1330 Wall.  We will be listening to the tape of the presentation for further suggestions from the subcommittee as a whole.  There has been no reply from World PI as of yet concerning television PSA work.  Suggestions for our next project will be discussed next Sunday.  In Loving Service,  Pam Mueller, 119 Connor, Joplin, MO 64801   tele.- 417-782-1467    e-mail    mueller_pam@hotmail.com    Monett, Neosho, Nevada, and Columbus groups please remember the P.I. Subcommittee would love to have one or our meetings where you are so we can discuss Public Information needs where your addicts live.  Just let us know where and when, it doesn't necessarily need to be at your meeting place (we could meet at a restaurant if there was enough privacy), we will do all we can to accommodate.  We have already held a P. I. meeting in Pittsburg, KS.

Discussion:  If PI is keeping track of where the flyers are and addicts are checking on their status. Yes.

Blood, Sweat and Tears

Hello Area,

I’m Kelvin and I am an addict.  I am GSR for Blood, Sweat and Tears group of Narcotics Anonymous of Nevada, MO.  We meet Thursday and Friday’s at 8pm  at 301 S. Pine.  Our attendance varies from 10 to 17 addicts for the past month and donations barely cover expenses.

Our bash however was a huge success and we would like to thank everyone responsible for putting it together and especially those who came and shared in our event making it such a success.  Our balance after the bash is 511 dollars.  We are using this money to meet our prudent reserve plus bringing our bills current and ordering books and literature.  We offer a $5.00 donation at this time.

In Loving Service,

But Do It

Wed. 6:30PM Bldg 2 1502 S. Michigan, Joplin, MO.

Same as always, core attendance with some new additions that we hope may soon move to the “regulars” list, great meetings and the standard 25.00 donation to OASC.

We had 2 birthday meetings this month, Billie W. with 6 years and Brian C. with 8 years.

5th Tradition

Greetings Ozark Area

I apologize for my absence the last few meetings, I’m pleased to announce that our group is doing well.  We still meet at 6:30pm-7:30pm Tues.-Thurs. and 8-9 Fri. at 618 Jackson.  We have no donation at this time.

We are hosting our 23rd Halloween Birthday Party this month on the 26th at the Galena Senior Center, 720 Wall, Galena, KS. There will be a speaker, Yogi H., Dance, Raffle, Costume Contest.  Maybe not in that exact order, but it will all happen.  Come support or just relax and have fun.

High Noon Group

High Noon Group

Neosho, Mo. 64820

Greetings from Neosho.  We are at the:

First Baptist Church

201 Jefferson Street

Neosho, Mo.  64850

Our meetings are Monday & Friday at Noon.  The meeting is non-smoking.  Our Monday meeting continues to go well.  We’ve had a couple of new folks this month, besides our regulars.

Last Friday’s meeting, was unattended, a few people showed up but left.  They came individually, popped in and left.  Later talked to each other.  Bad planning and no one took responsibility for opening up.

We may need to disband the Friday meeting.

We are also considering having to leave Area, as we haven’t been able to donate financially very often and keep our meeting going.  We still want an N. A. group to support the drug court people who have to work nights and other who prefer the day meetings.  We usually have 9 to 11 people in attendance for the Monday meeting.  Our “Trusted Servants” have been struggling with work hours, sleep deprivation, being physically sick (I’m here today because our GSR is off work for the next week and in bed with vertigo).  The last two Area meetings both GSR and Alternate GSR and Secretary were working.  The Treasurer graduated from drug court but was no longer able to attend Neosho meetings and was having a few set backs.  I was just voted in as treasurer for the group last Monday, October 14, 2002.

We still want to stick with “our primary purpose” and carry the N. A. message of recovery.  We continue to suggest getting N. A. literature, (we had $117.59 Show-Me Region order this month) sponsorship, and other meetings.

We have a $15.00 donation to Area.

In Love and Service,

Sandy H

Discussion:  It’s unnecessary to leave Area because a group cannot donate financially.

Higher Powered Group

Hello Ozark Area,

The Higher Powered Group meets Thursdays at 8pm at 128 W. Elm, Columbus, KS.  We have 8 to 10 regular addicts attending.  This is my last meeting as GSR for this group. I am resigning with the hope that I can offer my time in other areas of service.  It’s been a learning experience and I’ve enjoyed it.  Ray is here to take over.

In Loving Service,

Deanna J.

Never Alone Group

Good Afternoon Area,                                                                                      10-20-02

The Never Alone group meets on Tuesdays at 8:00pm.  The meeting is held in the basement of the St. Lawrence Catholic Church, we are located at 405 7th Street in Monett.

We have changed our schedule around just a little.  The first Tuesday is a closed discussion, the last Tuesday is Open, we also celebrate birthdays the last Tuesday of each month.  All other Tuesdays in between are closed, we read and discuss the Basic Text.  We are going through the Basic Text chapter by chapter.  We have found that several addicts have been wanting to do this, but were too insecure to ask for help in this area of their recovery.  It was only through our business meeting the first Tuesday after our regular meeting, that we found this out.

Our attendance is ok and the suggestions from last month’s area concerning the 7th Tradition, seemed to help some. Thank you for the suggestions! And your Time!

Respectfully a Trusted Servant of the Never Alone Group

Danny H

We Do Recover

Hello Area,

We Do Recover meets at 1330 Wall.  We have 8 pm meetings 7 days a week and midnight on Fri & Sat.

Our attendance has been down.  We are having around 20 to 50 addicts at each meeting.

Our donations have been low this month and we had to get into our prudent reserve to pay bills and purchase supplies.  So we don’t have an area donation this month.

November 16 we are having our Casino Night.

In Loving Service,

Renita G.

Miracles

(Adopted into the Ozark Area)

Hello Ozark Area,

My name is David and I am a grateful addict and I will be serving as the GSR for the Miracles Group.  First of all I would like to apologize for not being here today but I did not plan on being at Area this soon and I had already committed to working.

The Miracles Group meets on Friday nights at 6:30 p.m.  Our meeting is being held at the First United Methodist Church located at 501 West 4th Street in Joplin, MO,  room #106 on the N.W. side of the church, just look for the butt can and addicts.  This is an Open, Non-smoking, meeting with handicap access.  Though this is an open meeting we are very clear on who we are and why we are there.  Our first meeting was held on September 20, 2002 and we had 18 addicts present at that meeting.  Our attendance has been very steady with anywhere from 13 to 16 addicts since that meeting.  All of our service positions are filled, John T. will be our Alt. GSR, Kenny C. will be the treasurer, and Bridgit B. is the Secretary.  We have decided to have our business meeting on the 3rd Friday of every month and we are also going to have our monthly birthday/speaker meeting on the 4th Friday of the month.  How this will work is the person getting a medallion that month will be our speaker, if we have more than one person getting a medallion the person with the least amount of clean time will be our speaker, hence the New Comer is the most important person at any meeting.  At this time we do not need any financial help from the Area, we have received our Group Starter pack from world and we have key tags, coffee and etc.  The only thing that we ask for is your personal support at our meeting.  The Miracles Group would like to thank you for allowing us to be apart of the Ozark Area.  We have faith in the Area Service Committee and with that faith we can allow you to handle your business and we can keep our focus of having a weekly Narcotics Anonymous meeting and carrying the message to the addict who still suffers.  I look forward to seeing you all next month.

                                                            In Loving Service,

                                                            David B.

How It Works And Why

(Adopted into the Ozark Area)

Hello Ozark Area,

I’m Dee and I’m an Addict,

Sorry I can’t be here today.

How it works and why meets two times a week, Tuesday & Sundays at 8:00 pm, our meetings are an hour and a half long.  Our meetings focus on reading the It Works, How and Why book.  Tuesdays we have a Traditions study and Sundays we have a Step study.  Our attendance is from 4 to 6.  We are a new group so we don’t have a donation for area at this time. We will welcome support.

In Loving Service Dee K.
